At Communities In Schools® (CIS®), we believe every student deserves the opportunity to succeed—no matter their background, zip code, or ability. We show up for students in their communities, working to break down the barriers that stand in their way.
We envision a future rooted in educational equity, where every young person in Washington State has the resources and community support they need to thrive.
Why CIS Exist
Too often, students and their families face overwhelming challenges, such as housing instability, food insecurity, mental health needs, without knowing where to turn. Even when resources exist in a community, it can feel like a confusing maze to navigate. That’s where Communities In Schools steps in, for schools and in the community, helping connect students and families to the support they need, so no one has to face those challenges alone.
The Power of a Site Coordinator
At the heart of Communities In Schools is the Site Coordinator—a trusted, caring adult based inside the school who builds strong relationships with students and connects them to vital resources. Whether it’s basic needs, academic support, or mental health services, Site Coordinators collaborate with educators, families, and community partners to remove barriers that stand in the way of student success.
Operating in more than 200 schools across Washington, this evidence-based model meets students where they are. By surrounding them with a network of consistent support, students are empowered to navigate personal challenges and systemic obstacles—helping them stay in school, graduate, and shape the future they imagine for themselves and their communities.
