Five King County affiliates in the Communities In Schools of Washington statewide network are pleased to announce grants totaling more than $270,000 from United Way of King County to provide integrated student supports in schools across the county this school year.
Communities In Schools of Auburn, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, and Seattle all received grants to help their school-based Site Coordinators provide integrated supports – the “wrap around” type of help that students need to be successful in school and stay on track to graduate. These supports may include food, housing or health services support for impoverished students/families, access to a positive adult role model or mentor, or other activities during or outside the school day which support learning. All these services/activities are intended to remove barriers to student success and help them improve attendance, behavior, and grades.
The five King County affiliates served more than 29,000 students last year with school-wide services and nearly 2,200 of those received individualized support, tailored to their specific circumstances. Combined, the five had greater than a 99.6% success rate keeping struggling secondary students in school last year and helped the majority of all at – risk students served to improve in all target areas.
