Job Summary
The Development Director is responsible for developing a multi-year strategy and supporting annual plans that enable us to achieve our ambitious resource development goals. In addition to cultivating and developing their own resource development efforts, they will effectively leverage board member efforts to meet the revenue goals of the state office which are benchmarked and evaluated annually. This position reports directly to the State Director and works closely with them to develop the agency’s short- and long-term strategies for fundraising, providing leadership and expertise to help strengthen fundraising capability and capacity of Washington’s network of CIS affiliate offices. The state office has a history of strong operations and successful resource development, built upon a culture of philanthropy supported by committed board members and dedicated staff with the potential to grow the team.
The compensation for this position is $100,000 – $120,000 annually, with a competitive benefits package including 100% company paid medical/dental for the employee, 14 paid holidays and 15 days paid vacation to start, sick time, and employer contributed retirement after one year. The successful candidate will bring 7+ years of relevant nonprofit resource development expertise (or a combination of education and experience) to elevate this high performing agency.
Essential Functions
Resource Development for State Office (70% of workload)
- Develop and implement a comprehensive fund development plan to meet strategic objectives and financial goals.
- Develop, retain and deepen corporate and foundation relationships; coordinate event sponsorships and identify other potential avenues of corporate support.
- Collaborate with the Board Resource Development Committee Chair to lead and support activities of the state board; inspire, develop, and leverage board member talents and connections through coaching and mentoring to maximize resource development support.
- Implement, coordinate, and optimize an annual individual giving program with customized cultivation plans and donor stewardship.
- Lead and provide managerial oversight and support for the Development Manager; support the annual grants calendar and client relationship management database to achieve agency objectives and legal requirements.
- Oversee the development and implementation of the agency’s communications plan, centering student voice and ethical storytelling practices. Ensure the creation and distribution of communications in support of the agency’s goals.
- Oversee the development and implementation of friend-raising and fundraising events in alignment with the resource development plan.
- Coordinate our annual fundraising spring fundraiser gala, which generates an average income of $350,000 (the majority from corporate sponsorships). Secure contracted support and collaborate with board, staff, volunteers, and sponsors to meet established goals.
- Actively contribute to a culture of teamwork and community-centric fundraising with the state office and affiliate network.
- Ensure resource development strategy is coordinated with legislative and advocacy goals and initiatives.
- Represent Washington in national CIS initiatives and partnerships.

Resource Development & Capacity Building for Statewide Affiliate Network (30% of workload)
- Provide guidance, consulting, and leadership to Washington CIS affiliate executive directors, boards, and resource development professionals to strengthen fundraising skills and capacity within their local communities.
- Assist in capacity building and development support for three emerging affiliates as they work towards incorporating as independent 501c3 organizations.
- Develop and lead collaborative fundraising strategies through an affiliate network Resource Development committee;
- Convene affiliate resource development staff and facilitate learning communities, best practice sharing, continuous learning, and professional development.
- Demonstrate leadership and partnership in alignment with the state office values and belief in local empowerment.
- Stay on top of fundraising trends in the nonprofit and local community.
Job Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Minimum of 7 years fundraising experience for nonprofits and/or community organizations with increasing responsibilities; OR, a combination of experience and education (communications, public relations, or other related field preferred).
- Experience with a federated organization a plus.
- CFRE certification a plus.
- Experience with professional mentoring, leading or facilitating peer learning communities, and hosting professional development trainings a plus.
- Development and implementation of a successful resource development plan with a range of clearly defined fund development strategies.
- Use and management of a client relationship database for donor cultivation and stewardship.
- Direct engagement with Board members to cultivate prospective supporters and evidence of successful solicitation of gifts $5,000 or higher.
- Supervision and oversight of staff to support agency goals.
- Public speaking and presentations for small to mid-sized audiences.

Other Requirements
- Ability to work evening and weekends as needed.
- Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel to meet with donors and affiliate leaders across Washington State in various settings.
